Decisions, Decisions

I have to share part of this e-mail from my friend Tom.  He and Jody live in Portland, Oregon and they also have the lovely house Montone Due, which is right behind our house.

Tom understands the implications of where you have your morning coffee; this is not a decision to be taken lightly.  If we go to the Aries, we go out of loyalty, if we go to Giancarlo’s new bar it’s because we want to show our support. Either way it’s a tough choice!

Tom writes: “If we don’t don’t see you on Saturday, we’ll look forward to seeing you in the morning for a coffee, but at which bar. . . Aries or Carlo’s new bar?  In Montone, choices come with consequences and the Montonese will be watching and noticing our choices.  Will we hurt Carlo’s feelings if we go to the Aries?  What about the nice people we have come to know that run the Aries?  They were there for us when Erba Luna closed in the piazza.  How can we desert them now?  Is one bar now frequented by the communisti and the other by the fascisti?  Will we unknowingly be taking a political stand for or against Berlusconi by going to one bar or the other?  Can we order our caffe at one bar, then sit in the piazza closer to the other bar, thereby blurring our loyalties?  On a purely selfish note, which bar has the best café. . . the best paste?  Which bar has the most comfortable chairs. . . the best sun, or the best shade?”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.
